Cathedral in Đakovo

Cathedral in Đakovo

The largest sacral building in Slavonia is the cathedral in Đakovo, dedicated to St. Peter, and described by Pope John XXIII as the most beautiful church between Venice and Tsargrad. Its construction was ordered by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer in 1866 so as to give significance to Đakovo as the ecclesiastical centre of Slavonia. The cathedral is distinguished by red bricks and is equally beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside, where it is decorated by lavish stained glass and an altar.
